Another Jazz Legend: Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Here’s another Scratchboard work. This one is about 6X11. Kirk is playing 3 horns in this one as he summons the mystical fire from his hoodoo bebop.
It’s hard to decide at what level you pull back on the detail on these. On one hand, I like the primitive woodcut feel you can get from a scratchboard while on the other hand, I like the exacting detail you can emulate as well. Take a look at some of Mark Summer’s work (he did a bunch of portraits for Barnes and Noble), he’s got a cool, engraved look to his work.
